Vikramaditya Motwane's political documentary Indi(r)a's Emergency was recently premiered at the ongoing MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

The movie looks at the journey of India's former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, what led her to impose Emergency in the country in 1975 and its consequences.

Vikramaditya Motwane reveals, “I am generally anti-establishment”; receives praise for Indi(r)a's Emergency at MAMI

During the Q and A session, Motwane was asked about his relationship with the word ‘establishment.' The question, clearly, made the filmmaker hesitant to reply and he started laughing, along with the audience, Anurag Kashyap and Varun Grover, who were also present.

Motwane said, “I think (laughs). I mean, yes if the (pauses and laughs)… I think I am generally anti-establishment. That's the best answer I can give. I don't think at this point of time or in my youth and (after) becoming an adult, I don't think at any point of time in this country I have been pro-establishment for any government.”

During the course of the conversation, Kashyap had a question for Sameer Nair, the CEO of Applause Entertainment, the banner under which Indi(r)a's Emergency is made. Kashyap said, “There was a film that was (supposed to screen) in TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) Punjab 95 . It's an amazing film, we have nothing to do with the film. It disappeared; it was suddenly withdrawn (from the festival). So, there are ways sometimes censors deal with a film. They don't ask you for cuts. They don't ban you. They just don't get back to you. What do you do in a situation like this? If that happens.”

Nair's answer got everyone in splits as he said, “Actually, I am very pro-establishment.”
